Explaining the UNEB UCE Division system

UNEB stands for Uganda National Examinations Board. It is the national assessment body in Uganda responsible for setting and conducting examinations for primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions in the country. The board was established in 1983 under the Ministry of Education and Sports and is responsible for conducting examinations, grading, and releasing results. The exams conducted by UNEB include Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE). These exams are used to assess the academic performance of students and determine their eligibility for further education and employment opportunities. UNEB also provides examination services to other countries in the East African region.

The divisions are categorised as follows

Result/Division 1: To qualify for Result/Division 1, a student must have a minimum of eight subjects, which must include English Language (with a grade of at least Credit), a Humanity subject, Mathematics, and, except for visually challenged candidates, a science subject. The student must pass at least seven of the subjects at the credit level or better, and the aggregate score for the best eight subjects must not exceed 32.

Result/Division 2: To qualify for Result/Division 2, a student must have a minimum of eight subjects, including English Language. The student must pass at least six of the subjects at the credit level or better, and the aggregate score for the best eight subjects must not exceed 45.

Result/Division 3: To qualify for Result/Division 3, a student must meet one of the following criteria: (1) pass a minimum of eight subjects, with at least three of them at credit level or better; (2) pass a minimum of seven subjects, with at least four of them at credit level or better; or (3) pass a minimum of five subjects, with all of them at credit level or better. The aggregate score for the best eight subjects must not exceed 58.

Result/Division 4: To qualify for Result/Division 4, a student must meet one of the following criteria: (1) pass at least one subject with a grade of Credit or better; (2) pass at least two subjects with a grade of Pass 7 or better; or (3) pass at least three subjects with a grade of Pass 8 or better.

Result/Division 7: A candidate with Result/Division 7 has not qualified for the award of a UCE Certificate. This is because the candidate did not select/sit subjects according to the regulations, which is a violation of the entry regulations.
